Did you know that there's another Lake Placid? Lake Placid, Florida, was named by Dr. Melvil Dewey, creator of the Dewey Decimal System. He built the famous Lake Placid Resort in New York. Then, when he moved to Florida in 1925, he got the town council to agree to change the name of nearby Lake Stearns to Lake Placid. He built a resort on the lake which is still open to this day. Lake Placid, Florida has never attained the Olympic Games fame and status of its big sister city in New York.
