Balboa Island, California
January 05, 2011
Balboa Island is Orange County, California's most densely-populated community. Residents are packed house-to-house like sardines on this sun-drenched, man-made island, yet Balboa still maintains its homey smalltown charm. Once a sandspit, Balboa Island is a weekend mecca for the LA crowd, who flock here in droves to eat, play and enjoy the ocean breeze.
I had a hard time drawing this map because my sales guys wanted the main street, Marine Drive, to run horizontally. In reality, Marine Drive runs up and down, that is, north and south. That means that the whole map is caddywampus...what appears to be north on my map is actually west. Fortunately, I seem to be the only one who is bothered by the map's skewed directions. The merchants love the map, and went through them so quickly that an early reprint is planned.
If you would like a cartoon rendition of your island, coastline, or small country, I can draw it for you. Feel free to contact me, and I'll be glad to answer your questions.
